What Is the Best Manual Breast Pump ( Medela, Lansinoh Or Philips Avent )?

What Is the Best Manual Breast Pump

With eventful modern life, it makes sense that many mums will select to express milk with a breast pump. If you do not need to pump frequently, then a manual breast pump can be the perfect solution.

Yet, finding the best manual breast pump can be a challenge, there are so many models to choose from. Breastfeeding Moms have compiled a comparison between three Best Manual Breast Pump. Check it out.

1- Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump

This is the only manual in Medela breast pump variety. It is the most costly manual breast pump on the marketplace, and not far off the price of their cheapest electric breast pump.

That being said Medela is a very recommended breastfeeding brand, so they know their stuff. The pump features a two-phase expression to provide short, quick suction until he milk flows and then long, slow sucks to collect the milk.

Most mums will buy the Medela Harmony for guaranteed longevity, or at least the great customer support Medela gives. If you want to be in control of a steady suction without the noise of an electrical breast pump, then consider the Medela.

Product Description:

  • The newest technology in an easy-to-use manual pump.
  • Preferred by 9 out of 10 moms over other manual pumps.
  • Lightweight and portable for on the go pumping.
  • More milk in less time with 2-Phase Expression technology.

Includes:

  • 1 – Harmony breast pump
  • 1 – 24 mm (medium) Personal Fit breast shield
  • 1 – 5 oz/150mL BPA-free breast milk bottle with lid and stand
  • 1 – Valve
  • 1 – Membrane
  • 2 – Spare membranes

2- Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump:

This pump is cheaper than the Avent, and uses the same type of valve, so unlike the Medela, it is almost as effective as the Avent at getting milk.

It also takes standard size bottles, including Medela, Even-flo, etc., which is an advantage if you do not already use Avent bottles.

Still, I prefer the Avent for two reasons: first, the massage cushion on the Avent has “petal” air pockets that I like, and second, the Lansinoh takes much more effort to pump.

My hand gets tired within five or ten minutes of using this pump, which is not a problem I have had with either the Medela or the Avent pumps. I think it is because the diaphragm on the Lansinoh is much thicker.

So, well, I can see certain advantages to this Lansinoh (cost, bottles), it is not my favorite.

Product Description:

  • Two modes, stimulation and expression, for more milk in less time
  • Comfort fit flanges 2 sizes (standard and large) for ideal suction and fit
  • Ergonomic easy-express handle reduces hand fatigue
  • Includes the natural wave nipple and samples of the #1 selling breast milk storage bag for pump-store-feed capability
  • Compatible with Lansinoh momma bottle with natural wave nipple and Lansinoh breast milk storage bottles

Convenient and portable, the Lansinoh manual breast pump is ideal for occasional use at home or on the go.

Switch easily between two pumping modes, stimulation and expression, to aid in let-down and maximize pumping efficiency.

The ergonomic easy-express handle reduces hand fatigue, and two sizes of flanges, standard (25mm) and large (30.5mm), ensure ideal suction and pumping comfort. The Lansinoh manual breast pump is also a part of the Lansinoh pump-store-feed solution.

The wide neck bottle makes milk transfer easier and are compatible with the natural wave nipple so you can pump, store and feed, all with the same bottle. The bump best of baby award winner.

3- Philips Avent Manual Comfort Breast Pump:

These pumps are the best. The most comfortable to use, the short neck can be placed right next to the breast. They also get the most milk without making my hand tired.

The only disadvantages are that they are somewhat harder to assemble than the Medela, cannot accommodate different nipple sizes, cost more than the Lansinoh, require special Avent shaped bottles (usually included) and drip small amounts of milk from the cushion.

Still, the assembly difference is small, and I can learn to control milk dripping from the cushion. Comfort and milk matter most to me, so I enjoy this pump the most.

Product Description

Philips AVENT SCF330/20 Comfort Manual Breast Pump is uniquely designed for a more relaxing and comfortable expressing position to promote milk flow.

Unlike breast pumps that only operate properly when you lean forward, the Philips AVENT Comfort Manual Breast Pump allows you to sit comfortably upright as you pump, while the pump’s angled neck lets milk flow naturally from breast to bottle.

When you are able to relax, you can produce more milk. This manual pump is great for moms who want to pump either at home or on the go.

An ergonomic handle and lightweight, compact design makes it easy to operate with one hand. The collection container that connects to the pump also works as a bottle with the included natural, breast-shaped nipple.

The nipple makes transitioning between breast and bottle easier for your baby by encouraging comfortable latch on.

Risks Imposed By Marijuana While Breastfeeding

Marijuana and breastfeeding

Is it that only women who are away from drugs or any other addiction are allowed to become mother? No, even if you take marijuana or any other drug you have the rights to take baby, provided you can take good care of the baby in future. Now, what will happen to a baby whose mother takes marijuana regularly and had taken even during pregnancy? The baby must have born pre mature.

Marijuana and breastfeeding

Next come the question that what is the connection between marijuana and breastfeeding? When a mother breastfeeds her baby and takes marijuana at the same time are there chances that it will pass to the baby through the milk?

In marijuana the active ingredient is THC which is fat soluble. Thus, after consumption of marijuana, THC dissolves in the fat of the body. Now, baby milk has quite an amount of fat in it as it is good for the health of the baby. Thus, THC enters babies’ body through the milk. The more will be intake of marijuana by a woman, more will be the content of THC in her breast milk.

This is of course not good for the health of the baby. There will be signs that will come gradually to show the ill effects of marijuana on the baby. The baby will not have developed co-ordination skills. It may even alter the brain cell metabolism mainly because the development of brain in a baby takes place during the first month only.

Other risk of marijuana

When some is not careful about marijuana and breast feeding, it is obvious that they will become more prone to problems related to marijuana. Normally a mother who is breastfeeding and takes marijuana at the same time will surely lost her sense. She will not be bale to understand what is correct for her baby and what is not. It will make her out of sense and thus there are less chances that she will be able to breastfeed her baby.

Apart from that there is risk that the volume and quality of breast milk will also reduce for women who takes marijuana. The level of prolactin will reduce that is necessary for production of breast milk in women.

Apart from that if new parents smoke then there may be risk of asthma in the new born. Sometimes it may be so dangerous that there are risks of death of the baby too!

To end the note

Finally for ending the discussion on marijuana and breastfeeding, you should remember that there are only harmful effects of taking marijuana whatever is the form of intake. It will just not bad for your health but even will have worse effect on your baby. Just do not start it because it’s the trend, rather look out for ways that will help you take marijuana at least during the period when you are bringing a new life to the earth. Avoid marijuana during breastfeeding and give your baby a healthy life.

Keep Check on Drinking Coffee While Breastfeeding

Coffee and breastfeeding

To take care of a new born a mother has to work a lot. She seldom gets time for herself. Sometimes she is not even able to sleep for days. All this makes her tired and to reduce this tiredness and fatigue she may need a cup of coffee to feel energized. Coffee has excellent stimulant properties that make her energized again to meet all demands of her newly born baby.

Now, a nursing may have heard from her friends and well-wishers that coffee and breastfeeding are no-no. While she is breastfeeding her baby she should avoid alcohol, coffee and other items that are harmful for her baby. Now the question arises that whether drinking coffee during lactating period is safe or not?

Coffee and its effect on a baby

When a mother is breastfeeding anything that she eats or drinks is passed to her baby through the milk that she feeds. After drinking a cup of coffee the caffeine present in it enters the blood streams and then the milk of the baby. After drinking coffee the caffeine content in the blood is highest after one hour of consumption and then it gradually reduces. Now, when the nursing mother drinks coffee regularly some amount of caffeine gets into the body of baby too.

A baby however does not have his liver developed so it does not have enzymes that will detoxify the caffeine from the body of the new born baby. It will take around 100 hours to remove that much caffeine from a new born baby that an adult can complete in six to eight hours. When the mother drinks coffee regularly, her baby has caffeine accumulation in his body.  Thus a change in the behavior of the child can be noticed.

Negative effects of coffee

The effect of coffee on babies may differ from one baby to another. While some of them may be very sensitive to it, others may not be much affected by it. However, commonly for the effect of caffeine in their body they remain over active. They sleep very little and have mood swings easily. They may become unsettles and cry a lot as they are unable to do what they wish. Some babies may have digestive problem.

Apart from the baby, coffee and breastfeeding is important for others too. Those who drink more than three cups of coffee everyday will have breast milk with low iron content. This happens as too much caffeine may hamper the iron absorption capacity of body. This may lead to iron deficiency in mother which will naturally pass on to the baby. And when this continues for long time both mother and baby may suffer from anemia.

Conclusion

thus, the question still remains that whether coffee and breastfeeding should never be done together or there are chances? If you were addicted to coffee before your baby was born , then after their birth you need to drink coffee. Drink one or two cups daily so that the content does not become more. However, keep an eye on the baby to see if there are ant behavioral changes.
